A decision that can change the course of history

This year’s March Madness season was incredible. Despite everyone’s bracket being broken, this was the first time the men’s tournament had teams that weren’t the number 1 seed in the finals. As I predicted, the UConn Huskies are our 2023 NCAA Champions. I thought this game would be much closer considering the talent on both teams. It wasn’t until the final 8 minutes that San Diego State made a minor comeback, but it wasn’t enough. One thing to emphasize about this year’s March Madness is how LSU’s Angel Reese is a cousin to UConn’s Jordan Hawkins who are both from Maryland. I am happy about the LSU victory but also have mixed feelings regarding her response to Jill Biden’s invite to the Whitehouse. The First Lady invited LSU and the University of Iowa to attend the Whitehouse to celebrate their accomplishments. Reese declined the offer because she feels it isn’t traditional to invite the winning team in addition to the runner-up.

I fully agree, however, I don’t think she had to make this situation about race considering that Iowa was predominately white. On the other hand, if the First Lady wants to invite both teams she should consider that she’s changing a tradition. For instance, it would look bad if she invited only one team next year regardless of their race. This would only circle back to this year’s championship invite where the media wouldn’t be too happy.
